What happens before your street is finished
Markham follows a local sequence. Knowing the phase explains why one road can be clear while another is still waiting.

Treat primary and secondary roads
Crews attend to the main network before local streets. Select a road in the winter map to see its service classification.
- 2Residential streets
Begin local clearing at the residential threshold
Local plowing starts at 7.5 cm. Continuing snowfall affects the start, and the mapped service level allows up to 16 hours for the operation.
- 3Separate services
Finish sidewalks and registered entrance assistance
Sidewalks and approved windrow-assistance addresses are separate work. A road pass does not mean every adjoining path or driveway is complete.

- During snow clearing, salting, sanding, and related winter maintenance, do not park on either side of city streets.
- Existing permits and overnight exemptions are suspended during those operations.
- Outside winter operations, the normal year-round restriction between 2:30 and 6 a.m. still requires a valid exemption.

The city plow department is not responsible for every road, sidewalk, driveway, alley, or parking area.
City of Markham
Provides municipal road and sidewalk winter services and manages the registered windrow assistance program.
Other public agencies
York Region maintains its roads and transit shelters; Canada Post handles its mailboxes. A municipal plow cannot resolve every nearby access problem.
Private property managers
Arrange service for private roads, condominium areas, and driveways outside an eligible municipal program.

Will the city automatically clear the end of my driveway?
No. Windrow assistance requires eligibility and registration. Read the program requirements before assuming your household is covered.
