Madison parking rules that matter
- During a declared snow emergency, the entire city follows alternate side parking from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.
- Park on the odd addressed side on an odd date and the even addressed side on an even date.
- Inside the downtown Snow Emergency Zone, alternate side parking is required only during a declared emergency.
- During a declaration, selected city garages are free from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Do not use the top level or metered spaces, and do not remain longer than 48 hours.
- Always follow additional restrictions shown on street signs.

When does Madison plow residential streets?
A citywide plow normally begins near the end of a storm when at least three inches have accumulated on the roads. Smaller events mainly receive salt route service.
Does alternate side parking apply downtown every winter night?
Inside the Snow Emergency Zone, it applies only during a declared snow emergency. Other city areas may follow the seasonal program once it has been activated. Always use the current answer on the city winter page.
Why is packed snow left after the plow?
Plow blades cannot remove every thin layer from a rounded road surface, and Madison generally does not salt residential streets. A packed layer is expected in cold weather.
